Civil Status refers to the sum of acts and events concerning the life of a citizen: birth, marriage, Civil partnerships, death, divorce and citizenship, registration of which falls within the remit of the “Ufficiale di Stato Civile”, whose functions are performed in Italy by municipal offices and abroad by consular offices. WARNING: if you reside in Queensland or Northern Territory want to update your civil status you must be already registered at the AIRE!
How to update your civil status:
- Fill in the request form.
- Only original documents (birth, marriage, civil partnership, death, divorce).
- If the documents are from Australia, please book an appointment at the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) office for the apostille.
- Translate the documents into Italian (only the certificate, not the apostille) contacting a NAATI translator or by using the available templates on the bottom side of this page – strictly NOT to be filled in by hand.
- You can post the documents to the Consulate.
- Please note that we will keep your documents. We will not give them back.
Uploading a child’s birth certificate: if the child’s parents are not married, their names should be in the “informant” section of the child’s birth certificate.
Uploading a divorce: you need to apply for an original of your divorce paper to the Family Court accordingly. You also need to complete this separate form of disclosure (N.B.: certain Municipalities require a copy of the full divorce order)
