| CONSULATE OF ITALY IN BRISBANE
We inform you that for the year 2026, all available appointment slots for identity card issuance have now been filled. We are aware of the growing demand within the community and are working on creating a new schedule for next year, which will include a greater number of appointments and new features such as the option to join a waiting list. The new calendar will be available in December. |

The Electronic Identity Card (Carta di Identità Elettronica, CIE) is a multifunctional document that certifies the citizen’s identity, shows the fiscal code (tax code), and can be used to request an identity on the SPID system (Public Digital Identity System), which provides access to services offered by Italian Public Administrations.
The electronic identity card is equivalent to a passport for travel purposes ONLY in the Member States of the European Union, in the States of the Schengen Area (EU + Iceland, Norway, Switzerland, Liechtenstein), and in those countries where specific international agreements are in place.
The Electronic Identity Card can only be requested by appointment, through the PRENOT@MI platform.
The CIE can only be issued to Italian citizens legally residing in Queensland and the Northern Territory, who are already registered in the consular records and whose personal details are already present in the A.I.R.E. database (Registry of Italians Residing Abroad).
The CIE is not issued on the spot on the day of the appointment; it is produced by the Istituto Poligrafico e Zecca dello Stato (State Mint and Printing Works) in Rome and subsequently sent from Italy by mail to the residential (or contact) address declared by the applicant.
Mandatory Requirements to Apply for the Electronic Identity Card
In order for the CIE to be issued, it is essential that the applicant:
-
Is registered with A.I.R.E. and that their name has been entered into the relevant system by the Italian municipality of reference.
-
Has their birth certificate transcribed in Italy, since the transcription details must appear on the CIE.
-
Has a Fiscal Code (tax code) validated by the Italian Revenue Agency (Agenzia delle Entrate) and by the Italian municipality of reference. Those who do not have a Fiscal Code can request one from this Consulate by writing to aire.brisbane@esteri.it.
-
Has updated their records with the consular office in the event of a change of address, change of marital status, or birth of children. In these cases, please contact the Consulate by writing to brisbane.statocivile@esteri.it to complete the update of your records before requesting an appointment for the identity card.

Delivery of the Electronic Identity Card
The CIE is not issued on the day of the appointment but will be sent from Italy by registered mail, arranged by the Istituto Poligrafico e Zecca dello Stato, directly to the address chosen by the applicant, approximately 15 days after the date of the appointment at the Embassy/Consulate and/or after finalization of the request. The applicant can track the shipment on the Poste Italiane website: https://www.poste.it/prodotti/raccomandata.html.
In case of failed delivery due to an incorrect address, the item will be held for 30 days at the local post office. At the end of this period, the parcel is returned to the Consulate for further delivery attempts.
