Marriages and Civil Unions

The procedure varies considerably depending on the country in which the future spouses intend to celebrate the marriage or civil union, as well as on the citizenship of the parties involved.

  • Marriages or civil unions already celebrated in Australia or in another country

For Italian citizens registered with AIRE at the Consulate, it is necessary to request the transcription of the marriage or civil union in Italy.

  • Marriages or civil unions of Italian and EU citizens to be celebrated in Italy

For marriages or civil unions to be celebrated in Italy between parties of Italian or EU citizenship, it is necessary to request the marriage banns.

  • Marriages or civil unions of Australian citizens to be celebrated in Italy

For marriages or civil unions to be celebrated in Italy between parties of Australian citizenship, they must follow the procedure required to obtain the atto notorio (sworn declaration) at the Consulate.
