To register a marriage or civil union celebrated in Australia, this Office must receive:
- A request for transcription of civil status records.
- The original marriage or civil union certificate issued by the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages, legalized by means of an apostille (issued by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade).
- An Italian translation of the certificate, carried out either by an official NAATI translator or independently. If you choose to translate it independently, please note that the translation must fully conform to the original text. If this Office finds discrepancies with the English text or missing elements, all documentation will be returned to the applicant for correction.
- Please note that translation of the apostille is NOT required.
- A photocopy of the Italian identity card or Italian passport of the Italian citizen(s), and a photocopy of the passport of the foreign citizen (if the spouses are not both Italian).
To register a marriage or civil union celebrated in a country other than Australia, this Office must receive:
- A request for transcription of civil status records.
- The original marriage or civil union certificate issued by the competent authority of the country where it was contracted, legalized according to the procedures required by that country.
- An Italian translation of the certificate, carried out by a professional translator and legalized/certified according to the procedures required by the country where the marriage was contracted.
- Please note that translation of the apostille is NOT required.
- A photocopy of the Italian identity card or Italian passport of the Italian citizen(s), and a photocopy of the passport of the foreign citizen (if the spouses are not both Italian).
The above-mentioned documentation may be sent by post to the Consulate of Italy in Brisbane, Level 8, 199 George Street, Brisbane City, QLD, 4000, or delivered in person at this Consulate during public opening hours, without the need for an appointment.
