The passport application must be submitted to the office with territorial jurisdiction based on the applicant’s residence, either in Italy (Questure) or at the Consulate of Italy in Brisbane for those residing in Queensland or the Northern Territory. Citizens who live far from Brisbane may contact the Honorary Consul in Cairns and Honorary Consul in Darwin , who are authorized to collect passport biometric data; the passport will then be issued in Brisbane and mailed to the citizen (more details below).

REQUIREMENTS

Passports are issued to Italian citizens who:

1. are residents in Queensland or the Northern Territory;
2. are registered with AIRE at the Consulate of Brisbane;
3. have updated their civil status records (marriages/civil unions, births/adoptions of children, divorces, deaths of family members). Italian citizens are in fact required to report to the competent consular office all changes in civil status that occur during their stay abroad, providing the relevant documents. Law 1185/1967 “Rules on Passports” provides, among other things, that when submitting the application, the applicant must prove their identity, possession of Italian citizenship, and family status.

RENEWAL TIMELINE
Passports are issued to replace previous passports that have expired or will expire within 6 months of the appointment date.
The issuance of a first passport is only possible after the AIRE municipality of registration has recorded the birth or acquisition of citizenship.
During the appointment, documentation is verified and biometric data is collected. The passport will be ready after 5 working days. After the fifth day, the document can be collected at the Consulate during public opening hours. The applicant may choose to receive the document at home by presenting a pre-paid, registered (tracked) satchel during the appointment.

HOW TO OBTAIN A PASSPORT FOR RESIDENTS

1. Book an appointment via the Prenot@mi Portal and confirm it between 10 and 3 days before.
2. Bring to the Consulate:
   • 2 recent ICAO-format passport photos (35mm x 45mm);
   • the previous Italian passport (if held);
   • the passport application form for ADULTS and/or MINORS;
   • the declaration stating that the applicant is not subject to orders prohibiting passport issuance (click here for more information);
   • a pre-paid, registered (tracked) satchel if choosing to have the passport mailed.
   • An application for a passport for a minor must be accompanied by a declaration of consent from both parents or the legal guardian:

• • • consent from Italian or EU citizen parents;
    • consent from an Australian or non-EU parent: this form must be signed in person at the Consulate at the time of the appointment.

3. Payment of consular fees is made in Australian dollars by debit or credit card (Visa or Mastercard), or in cash.

BIOMETRIC DATA COLLECTION AT THE HONORARY CONSULATES IN CAIRNS AND DARWIN
Italian citizens residing closer to Cairns and Darwin may have their biometric data for the passport collected directly at the respective Honorary Consulates, by scheduling an appointment via email with the relevant office. Once fingerprints and signature have been collected, the Consulate of Brisbane carries out the necessary checks for the absence of impediments and, once the process is complete, sends the passport to the applicant via pre-paid, registered (tracked) mail. In these cases, the verification of the absence of impediments and the mailing process may make the issuance procedure longer.

HOW TO OBTAIN A PASSPORT FOR OCCASIONAL CITIZENS (NON-RESIDENTS)
An Italian citizen who is temporarily in Queensland or the Northern Territory, not registered with AIRE in this jurisdiction, and whose passport has been stolen, lost, or damaged, may contact brisbane.passaporti@esteri.it, providing:

1. the reasons for the urgency;
2. the complete address of residence in Italy or in another country of AIRE registration;
3. a copy of pages 2, 3, and 4 of their passport, if available (in PDF);
4. supporting documentation for the urgency (e.g., flight booking if travelling soon) (in PDF);
5. another form of identification;
6. a copy of the theft or loss report filed with local authorities.

The consular officer will request authorization to issue the passport from the Questura or the Consulate with jurisdiction over the applicant’s residence, and will inform the applicant of the expected waiting time. The applicant must create a profile on the Prenot@mi Portal and look for an appointment in the days following the report.
At the appointment, the applicant must provide the documentation required for residents as listed above.

ETD (EMERGENCY TRAVEL DOCUMENT)
An Italian citizen temporarily in the jurisdiction, without documents, and with an urgent need to return to Italy or to their country of AIRE registration, may request a temporary emergency document (ETD). The ETD is issued free of charge, by appointment, by writing to brisbane.passaporti@esteri.it.
In support of the application, the following must be provided:

1. the complete address of residence in Italy or in another country of AIRE registration;
2. a copy of pages 2, 3, and 4 of their passport, if available (in PDF);
3. the flight booking (the ETD will only be valid for the route indicated at the time of the appointment);
4. another form of identification, if available;
5. a copy of the theft or loss report filed with local authorities.

URGENT PROCEDURE
In cases of proven necessity, which will in any case be assessed by the head of the office, the Italian citizen may access consular services through the urgent procedure, without an appointment.
For such requests, the applicant must pay, in addition to the standard service fee, the urgency fee.
The urgency must be justified by:

1. serious family or health reasons, certified by competent public or private institutions or authorities attesting to the urgency;unavoidable work-related needs, supported by a motivated
2. request signed by a person in a managerial role (including their name, position, and phone number), written on the employer’s letterhead, and accompanied by proof of the flight booking or other travel document.

Please note that the benefits of the urgent procedure cannot under any circumstances be extended to the holder’s family members.
For passport issuance, if the applicant is not registered with AIRE, the office must obtain clearance and authorization from the relevant Questura.
Without this, the passport cannot be issued even in emergency cases.
