Mission of Consul Napolitano to Bundaberg and Hervey Bay

The Consul of Italy in Brisbane, Mr. Salvatore Napolitano, was in Bundaberg and Hervey Bay from February 28th to March 1st to meet local authorities, the Italian community and on a consular mission to collect biometric data for the issue of passports to the Italian residents in the area. Nearly 40 people have been assisted during the consular mission, and the next one of this kind will be organised in Cairns at the end of April- beginning of May.

In Hervey Bay, Honorary Consular Correspondent Gabriela Corridore organised a meeting with Lord Mayor George Seymour. State Parliamentarian Ted Sorensen, former Deputy Prime Minister Warren Truss, and members of the local Italian community also attended the meeting.

In Bundaberg, the Consul met with Lord Mayor Jack Dempsey to explore a broad range of collaboration opportunities between Italy and the Bundaberg Region, in particular in technology and innovation, University exchange programs. Napolitano’s mission followed the very successful visit in Bundaberg of H.E. Ambassador Tardioli, together with other European Heads of Mission, in October 2019.

Regarding cultural and social relations, both the Consul and the Mayor emphasized the contribution of the Italian community of Bundaberg to bridge the relations between Italy and Wide Bay-Burnett area, and focused on the close connection with Italy of Bundaberg pioneer and aviator Bert Hinkler. Hinkler pushed the boundaries of aviation, and tragically died in 1933 on Pratomagno mountain while flying from the U.K. to Australia. He is buried in the “Cimitero Evangelico degli Allori” in Florence, and in the city of Bundaberg he is remembered in the Hinkler Hall of Aviation.

At the meeting with the Italian community organised by the Honorary Consular Correspondent Corridore at The Waves Sport Club in Bundaberg (founded by Italians), in the presence of the President of Com.It.Es Mrs. Mariangela Stagnitti, the Consul and all participants acknowledged the values and example of the Italian community who settled in Bundaberg , Wide Bay-Burnett and Fraser Coast as well in Queensland and Australia. Furthermore, local authorities stressed their full openness to welcome friendly young Italians tourists and workers in the Regional Area of Bundaberg also for fulfilling their visa requirements.
