Starting from August 3, 2026, the paper version of the identity card will no longer be valid for travel abroad, regardless of the expiration date printed on the back.
Decree-Law No. 108 of June 26, 2026 introduced some important changes:
-
The non-expired Paper Identity Card can still be used as an identification document in dealings with Italian Public Administration and with entities providing public services, including Consulates.
-
Italian Municipalities (Comuni) may, in cases of urgency, issue a provisional identity document valid for travel abroad, non-renewable, with a validity of no more than 6 months. This document may not be accepted in some foreign countries: check entry requirements on Viaggiare Sicuri.
-
As of June 1st, Italian citizens residing abroad (registered with AIRE) can request the CIE (Electronic Identity Card) at any Italian Municipality, as specified by Law No. 11 of January 19, 2026. Remember to bring your Tax Code (Codice Fiscale) with you!
