NOTICE TO THE PUBLIC : NEW SERVICES – CITIZENSHIP AND CIVIL STATUS SECTOR STARTING FROM 1 JULY 2025

The Consulate of Italy in Brisbane informs that starting from Tuesday, 1 July 2025, the Consulate will offer to the public two new services in the citizenship–civil status sector. These services will be prioritised through dedicated appointment slots at the Consular Office in Brisbane. Please note that these services will NOT be available at the two Honorary Consulates of this consular jurisdiction—namely those in Darwin and Cairns.

ACQUISITION OF CITIZENSHIP BY BENEFIT OF LAW

Who is eligible? Minor children born abroad to an Italian citizen parent who does not automatically transmit Italian citizenship.

How to book an appointment:

Send an email to brisbane.statocivile@esteri.it with the subject line:
ACQUISTO di CITTADINANZA per BENEFICIO di LEGGE.

Required documents:

1) Italian birth certificate of one of the parents (original), OR
Italian citizenship certificate when citizenship was obtained through an administrative or judicial application submitted by 11:59 pm (Rome time) on 27 March 2025, or through an appointment booked by that same date;
2) Birth certificate of the minor born abroad, apostilled and translated into Italian;
3) Declaration of intent to acquire Italian citizenship from both parents:
– Within one year of the child’s birth, OR
– By 31 May 2026 for those who were minors as of 24 May 2025. If the minor turns eighteen years old before 31 May 2026, the declaration must be submitted personally by him/her by that date;
4) Paper receipt of the bank transfer of Euros 250, addressed to:
“Ministero dell’Interno D.L.C.I. Cittadinanza”

IMPORTANT: Any inaccuracy in the payment receipt or incorrect reference field will result in the rejection of the application.

Note: It will not be possible to accept statutory declarations (under Articles 46 and 47 of Presidential Decree 445/2000) to prove any of the above requirements. Only for AIRE-registered citizens, a self-certificate can replace ONLY the parent’s citizenship certificate.

PLEASE NOTE:
The declaration of intent must be formal and made in person at the Consular Office. Declaration templates will be provided on the day of application and filled out in the presence of a consular officer. No witnesses are required.

REACQUISITION OF CITIZENSHIP FOR FORMER ITALIAN CITIZENS

Who is eligible?

Persons born in Italy or Italian citizens born abroad who were resident in Italy for at least two consecutive years, and who lost Italian citizenship before 15 August 1992 in one of the following cases:

  1. Voluntarily acquired a foreign citizenship no later than 15 August 1992 and established residence abroad (Article 8(1) of Law 555/1912);
    2. Acquired foreign citizenship without voluntary intent, renounced Italian citizenship, and resided abroad (Article 8(2) of Law 555/1912);
    3. As unemancipated minor children of a parent who lost citizenship, shared the same residence and acquired the citizenship of a foreign state (Article 12 of Law 555/1912).

It should be emphasized that the reacquisition of citizenship by former Italian citizens does not allow the transmission of the status civitatis to their descendants. RIACQUISTO di CITTADINANZA per EX CITTADINI.

Required documents:

– Valid identity document issued in Australia, for identification purposes;
– Birth certificate (for those born abroad: the birth certificate must meet the legalization (apostille) and translation requirements for registration in Italy);
– For those born abroad only: Historical residence certificate showing at least two consecutive years of residence in Italy;
– Historical citizenship certificate proving previous possession of Italian citizenship;
– Documentation proving the acquisition of foreign citizenship and, if applicable, renunciation of Italian citizenship, such as the Australian certificate of naturalisation. All foreign-issued documents must be apostilled and translated.

Note: It will not be possible to accept statutory declarations (under Articles 46 and 47 of Presidential Decree 445/2000) to prove any of the above requirements.

PLEASE NOTE:
The declaration of intent must be formal and made in person at the Consular Office. Declaration templates will be provided on the day of application and filled out in the presence of a consular officer. No witnesses are required.
On the same day, the applicant must pay a consular fee of Euros 250, preferably via EFTPOS.
