Under Law no. 74 of 23 May 2025, the deadlines have reopened for reacquiring Italian citizenship if the applicant:
– Was born in Italy or resided in Italy for at least two continuous years, and
– Lost Italian citizenship on or before 15 August 1992 under:
- Article 8(1) or (2) of Law no. 555 of 1912 (e.g. through naturalization in a foreign country or by involuntary acquisition of foreign citizenship), or
- Article 12 of the same law (e.g. children of parents who lost citizenship).
The reacquisition does not apply to those who renounced or lost citizenship after 16 August 1992.
When to Apply: Applications can be submitted between 1 July 2025 and 31 December 2027.
Required Documents:
1)Valid ID issued by the current country of citizenship
2)Birth certificate (if born abroad, it must be legalized (apostilled)and translated for transcription in Italy)
3)Historical residence certificate (if born abroad), issued by the relevant Italian municipality
4) Historical citizenship certificate
5)Proof of how and when Italian citizenship was lost, such as:
– Foreign naturalization certificate
– Or, if applicable, a birth certificate with citizenship details and acquisition grounds (must be apostilled and translated)
Fee: €250, payable at the Consular Office
How to Apply: The declaration must be made personally by the applicant.
Citizenship is reacquired from the day after the declaration is made, not retroactively from birth.
