{"id":7964,"date":"2026-09-03T04:09:57","date_gmt":"2026-09-03T02:09:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/consbrisbane.esteri.it\/servizi-consolari-e-visti\/servizi-per-il-cittadino-straniero\/citizenship-new-web-section\/rinuncia-alla-cittadinanza-italiana\/"},"modified":"2026-09-03T04:36:38","modified_gmt":"2026-09-03T02:36:38","slug":"rinuncia-alla-cittadinanza-italiana","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/consbrisbane.esteri.it\/en\/servizi-consolari-e-visti\/servizi-per-il-cittadino-straniero\/citizenship-new-web-section\/rinuncia-alla-cittadinanza-italiana\/","title":{"rendered":"Renouncing the Italian citizenship"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Law 91\/1992 allows renunciation of Italian citizenship in specific cases.<\/p>\n<p>Queensland or Northern Territory residents may renounce the Italian citizenship by booking a specific appointment via email at <a href=\"mailto:brisbane.cittadinanza@esteri.it\">brisbane.cittadinanza@esteri.it<\/a>, specifying in the subject line \u201cAPPUNTAMENTO PER RINUNCIA ALLA CITTADINANZA ITALIANA PER\u201d and your full name.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0Who can renounce\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The citizenship can be renounced:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>By an Italian citizen who has attained the age of 18, is also a citizen of another country, and is a resident or has established residence abroad (Act 91\/92, art. 11);<\/li>\n<li>By a person over 18 who has acquired the Italian citizenship whilst a minor due to the acquiring or reacquiring of the citizenship by one of his\/her parents, provided that he\/she is also holding the citizenship of another country (Act 91\/92, art. 14);<\/li>\n<li>By a minor who is adopted by an Italian citizen, once he\/she has attained the age of 18 (Act 91\/92, art. 3).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>N.B.: \u00a0a minor who is the child of a person renouncing Italian citizenship will NOT lose Italian citizenship.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0How to renounce\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In order to finalize the deed of renunciation, which will be prepared by a consular officer, the applicant must come to the Consulate in person, with two witnesses that are able to understand the Italian language.<\/p>\n<p>At the appointment, the following documentation will also have to be lodged:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Birth certificate issued from the Municipality where the birth has been registered;<\/li>\n<li>Certificate of Italian citizenship;<\/li>\n<li>Documents showing that the applicant also has a foreign citizenship;<\/li>\n<li>Documents showing that the applicant is resident abroad;<\/li>\n<li>Copies od the IDs of the applicant and of the two witnesses;<\/li>\n<li>Receipt of payment of the prescribed amount of 250 EURO (see <strong>note<sup>*<\/sup> <\/strong>below);<\/li>\n<li>An equivalent in Australian dollars of 41.00 EURO for consular stamp duties payable in cash<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>*Note<\/strong>: The payment can be made with any Australian banking institution by providing the following details:<\/p>\n<p><strong>PAYEE<\/strong>: MINISTERO DELL\u2019INTERNO D.L.C.I. \u2013 CITTADINANZA<br \/>\n<strong>BANK NAME<\/strong>: POSTE ITALIANE<br \/>\n<strong>BANK ADDRESS<\/strong>: Viale Europa 175 \u2013 00144 ROMA<br \/>\n<strong>REFERENCE<\/strong>: <strong>full<\/strong> <strong>name<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>surname<\/strong>\u00a0of the applicant, followed by: \u201c<em><strong>Rinuncia alla cittadinanza italiana<\/strong><\/em>\u201d<br \/>\n<strong>IBAN<\/strong>: IT54D0760103200000000809020<br \/>\n<strong>BIC\/SWIFT<\/strong>: BPPIITRRXXX<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Law 91\/1992 allows renunciation of Italian citizenship in specific cases.
