{"id":1872,"date":"2023-09-05T04:14:07","date_gmt":"2023-09-05T02:14:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/consbrisbane.esteri.it\/servizi-consolari-e-visti\/servizi-per-il-cittadino-italiano\/stato-civile\/cambio-nome-cognome\/"},"modified":"2026-09-14T13:53:03","modified_gmt":"2026-09-14T11:53:03","slug":"cambio-nome-cognome","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/consbrisbane.esteri.it\/en\/servizi-consolari-e-visti\/servizi-per-il-cittadino-italiano\/stato-civile\/cambio-nome-cognome\/","title":{"rendered":"Change of name and surname"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Application for Change of First Name and\/or Surname<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Unlike in Australia, where a change of first name or surname takes place through a simple administrative procedure, in Italy the change of first name and\/or surname is an administrative process involving several authorities (Prefecture, Comune of AIRE residence, Consulate) and unfolds in multiple stages.<\/p>\n<p>Orders authorizing a change of first name or surname are exceptional in nature and can only be granted in the presence of objectively significant circumstances, supported by adequate documentation and solid, substantial justifications, as set out in Presidential Decree No. 396 of 3 November 2000.<\/p>\n<p>In particular, Presidential Decree 396\/2000 allows for:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A change of first name or surname because it is ridiculous or shameful, or because it reveals an origin out of wedlock (Art. 89).<\/li>\n<li>A change of first name, or the addition of another first name to one&#8217;s own (Art. 89).<\/li>\n<li>A change of surname, or the addition of another surname to one&#8217;s own (Art. 84).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Under no circumstances may an applicant request the attribution of surnames of historical significance, or surnames that could otherwise mislead others into believing the applicant belongs to illustrious or particularly well-known families in the place where the applicant&#8217;s birth record is registered or in the place of their residence.<\/p>\n<p>A woman is not permitted to change her surname to take her husband&#8217;s.<\/p>\n<p>In the case of an application to change the first name and\/or surname of a minor ITALIAN child whose birth record has been transcribed in Italy, a specific form must be used, which must be signed by both parents and accompanied by copies of the parents&#8217; and the minor&#8217;s passports.<\/p>\n<p>The applicant must:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Write to the Civil Status Office at <a href=\"mailto:brisbane.statocivile@esteri.it\">brisbane.statocivile@esteri.it<\/a> and request an appointment.<\/li>\n<li>Personally submit the application for change of first name or surname, completed in Italian, attaching:<\/li>\n<li>A photocopy of an Italian identity document.<\/li>\n<li>All documentation the applicant considers relevant to support the request. For example, this could include foreign civil status documents showing the new personal details, Italian and\/or foreign identification documents, statements, etc.<\/li>\n<li>Proof of payment of the stamp duty (imposta di bollo) of \u20ac16.00, to be paid to the competent Prefecture by bank transfer, using the following bank details:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>BENEFICIARY: Bilancio dello Stato<br \/>\nIBAN: IT79Z0100003245BE00000000QK<br \/>\nBIC: BITAITRRENT<br \/>\nREASON FOR PAYMENT: &#8216;taxpayer&#8217;s fiscal code&#8217; \u2013 Stamp duty on Prefecture application \u2013 reference year (YYYY) or month\/year (MM\/YYYY)<\/p>\n<p>The Consulate then forwards the documentation to the Prefect.<\/p>\n<p>The Prefect carries out the review and, if the requirements are met, issues a decree authorizing the posting of a summary of the application on the notice board (albo pretorio) of the Consulate of Italy in Brisbane. During the posting period (thirty days) and for the following thirty days, any interested third parties may file an objection with the competent Prefect. Once these periods have elapsed, the Prefect issues the final ruling which, subject to payment of the stamp duty, if favorable, must be transcribed and annotated by the applicant in the civil status register of the Comune where their birth record is registered.<\/p>\n<p>The Consulate will send the final decree to the applicant.<\/p>\n<p>Upon receiving the final decree authorizing the change of first name and\/or surname, the applicant must request its transcription at the Comune where their birth record is registered, or at the AIRE Comune, unless otherwise indicated in the decree itself by the Prefecture.<\/p>\n<p>Once the Comune has recorded the change of first name and\/or surname in its registers, this Consulate will be able to update the applicant&#8217;s personal record and issue new documents bearing the new personal details (passport, identity card, tax code, etc.).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Application for Change of First Name and\/or Surname Unlike in Australia, where a change of first name or surname takes place through a simple administrative procedure, in Italy the change of first name and\/or surname is an administrative process involving several authorities (Prefecture, Comune of AIRE residence, Consulate) and unfolds in multiple stages.
